Historically, clients provided physical masters for CD and DVD production. However, with the adoption of the DDP (Disc Description Protocol) as a more common, secure, and cost-effective method for uploading audio and video masters. We are increasingly seeing masters delivered to our stamper department without having been listened to or viewed by customers using third-party software to create them.
It is critical that all masters are tested and approved prior to submission, as your content goes directly to the glass master exactly as prepared in the DDP.
How to Listen to DDP Masters with Free Players
A DDP (Disc Description Protocol) master is a file format used in professional audio production for preparing CDs and archiving final mastered audio.
It’s a set of files that includes the audio, metadata, and album structure, essential for duplicating the exact CD content. Here’s how to listen to DDP masters using free software players.
Step 1: Download a DDP Player
- Sonoris DDP Player (Free Trial)
Sonoris offers a free trial of their DDP player, allowing you to listen to and verify your DDP masters. It has an intuitive interface that lets you load DDP files and play the tracks in sequence.

Step 2: Open and Load the DDP File
- Install the Player: After downloading and installing the player of your choice, open the application.
- Load the DDP Folder: Locate your DDP folder, which should contain files like `DDPID`, `DDPMS`, and `.DAT` files.
In the player, use the “Open DDP” or “Load” option to load the entire DDP folder.
Step 3: Playback and Verification
Once the DDP files are loaded, you can:
Play Tracks: Listen to each track sequentially to verify sound quality and transitions.
Check Metadata: Most players allow you to view track titles, ISRC codes, and other metadata to ensure accuracy.
Verify Track Order and Timing: Ensure the correct order of tracks and check for any audio gaps or issues between tracks.
These tools allow you to listen to and verify your DDP masters before sending them for CD duplication, ensuring high-quality output and precise results.
